Methodology

The 2025 Fitness Industry Benchmarking Report was compiled, tabulated, and analyzed by the Health & Fitness Association (HFA) in partnership with Industry Insights, Inc., an independent professional research and consulting firm that specializes in conducting financial and operating surveys, compensation studies, market assessment surveys, customer satisfaction research, educational programs, and other forms of customized research.

In April 2025, an email was sent to a global list of fitness facility operators and owners with a link to a strictly confidential online questionnaire. The survey was also promoted across HFA’s digital platforms. Responses were collected between April and June by Industry Insights, who analyzed the data for accuracy and consistency. Computer processing was performed on all data to ensure statistical validity and to produce the financial and operating ratios contained in this report. The dataset was supplemented by some open-source data from publicly listed companies. In total, the sample for the report encompassed 175 companies representing more than 17,000 fitness facilities across 27 countries, including 114 US respondents, representing over 8,000 locations.
