Health & Fitness Association Remembers Dr. Tyler Cooper

The Health & Fitness Association (HFA) joins the health and fitness community in mourning the loss of Dr. Tyler Cooper, president and CEO of Cooper Aerobics, who passed away on Wednesday, October 21, at the age of 55 after a battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

Tyler led the growth and evolution of Cooper Aerobics’ health, fitness, and wellness businesses, bringing together the perspectives of a physician and an accomplished business leader. His commitment to incorporating fitness into preventive healthcare helped strengthen the connection between the fitness industry and the broader medical community. Tyler also contributed his expertise and perspective to the Health & Fitness Association (HFA) through his service on HFA’s Medical, Science and Health Advisory Council.

Tyler was part of a family that profoundly influenced the industry. His father, Dr. Kenneth Cooper, founded The Cooper Institute and created Cooper Aerobics. His pioneering research helped establish the scientific credibility of exercise and demonstrated its essential role in preventing disease and improving health. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the industry, HFA inducted Dr. Kenneth Cooper into the inaugural class of the HFA Hall of Fame in 2025.

Tyler carried his father’s legacy forward while establishing his own record of leadership and accomplishment. Their work has influenced generations of fitness professionals, club operators, and healthcare leaders around the world.

“Tyler understood both the science behind physical activity and the important role our businesses and professionals play in improving people’s lives,” said Greta Wagner, HFA president and CEO. “He took great pride in the work his father began but also brought his own vision, leadership, and commitment to advancing the industry. The Cooper family means so much to our profession, and Tyler’s contributions will remain an important part of that history. We are deeply saddened by his passing.”

HFA’s Board of Directors, staff, and members around the world extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Kenneth and Millie Cooper; Tyler’s wife, Angie; their children, Clark, Lang, and Kai; the entire Cooper family; and his colleagues throughout the Cooper organization.

We honor Tyler’s life, his leadership, and his enduring commitment to advancing health through physical activity. His influence will continue to be felt throughout our industry for years to come.
