In today’s dynamic fitness market, having reliable benchmarks is essential for strategic planning. The Health & Fitness Association’s 2026 Fitness Industry Benchmarking Report presents a detailed analysis of key operating and financial data from the health and fitness industry. It is the definitive benchmarking resource for gyms, studios, and other fitness facilities.
Drawing on data from 244 operators representing nearly 27,000 facilities across 40 countries worldwide, the 2026 Fitness Industry Benchmarking Report (based on 2025 results) includes comparative financial ratios, operations data, and company profile information. It has been designed to provide easy-to-understand guidelines for identifying business performance improvement opportunities.
The report provides an abridged view of the HFA Fitness Industry Benchmarking Survey results. Survey participants have been given access to interactive, Online Reporting Tools. Housed in the HFA Research Portal, these supplemental resources allow for more specific data analyses (provided a minimum number of responding companies) than the main report could reasonably contain.
How to Use the Report
The HFA Fitness Industry Benchmarking Report has been designed to help companies that operate gyms, health clubs, studios, and other fitness facilities evaluate their own performance relative to that of similar companies to identify improvement opportunities. The statistics in this report represent broad performance yardsticks against which a company’s performance can be measured.
Using the information within this report, industry members can compare their own company’s financial, operating, and sales figures with the group of participants as a whole, clubs of a comparable revenue size, clubs of the same type, companies operating a similar number of locations, and companies grouped by profitability, reinvestment level, and monthly dues price. Spotting significant differences between your own company’s performance and the composites can be the first step toward improving performance.
What Benchmarks and KPIs Are Covered
The Fitness Industry Benchmarking Report covers a comprehensive set of financial and operational metrics and ratios, providing benchmarks for:
Revenue and growth, such as annual revenue per location, year-over-year revenue growth, revenue per member, and non-dues revenue.
Profitability and financial health, such as EBITDA margin, pre-tax earnings, return on total assets, current ratio, and debt-to-equity ratio.
Membership performance, such as membership growth, accounts added and dropped, retention, and membership contract structure.
Productivity and efficiency, such as revenue per full-time equivalent employee, revenue per indoor square foot, and occupancy cost per square foot.
Staffing and labor costs, such as full- and part-time staffing levels, payroll costs, and personnel expenses as a share of revenue.
