Entrepreneur and innovator to be honored for more than seven decades of leadership that helped shape the modern health and fitness industry.
Washington, DC–November 2, 2026–Ray A. Wilson was a driving force in the evolution of the modern health and fitness industry, spending more than seven decades introducing innovative approaches to health clubs, cardiovascular exercise, business operations, and entrepreneurship that continue to shape the industry today.
On March 10, 2027, the Health & Fitness Association (HFA) will honor his extraordinary legacy with a posthumous induction into the Health & Fitness Hall of Fame during the opening night of The HFA Show 2027 in Las Vegas.
The HFA Hall of Fame recognizes visionaries whose leadership, innovation, and lifelong contributions have shaped the health and fitness industry and created a lasting impact for generations to come. Wilson’s induction recognizes not only the businesses he built but also a career devoted to making fitness more accessible, advancing cardiovascular exercise, and developing generations of fitness professionals and entrepreneurs.
“Ray Wilson was one of the true pioneers of the modern fitness industry,” said HFA Interim President and CEO Greta Wagner. “He saw opportunities long before they became industry standards, from cardiovascular training and family-focused facilities to new approaches to membership and ownership. Just as important, he invested in people and created opportunities for others to build successful careers and businesses of their own. His influence can still be seen throughout our industry today.”
Wilson entered the fitness business when health clubs were still largely associated with bodybuilding. After being introduced to weight training as a teenager and later becoming a professional wrestler, he worked at a health club operated by 1939 Mr. America Bert Goodrich, an experience that inspired him to become a club owner.
In 1951, Wilson opened his first health club in Tucson, Arizona. From that modest beginning, he recognized the potential to bring fitness to a broader public. His early clubs helped make organized exercise more approachable to everyday men and women, including through women-focused concepts at a time when many fitness facilities remained male-dominated.
His influence extended well beyond the clubs he created.
Wilson helped develop European Health Spas, one of the largest fitness chains in the United States at the time. The concept combined exercise with amenities such as whirlpools, saunas, and steam rooms, reflecting his early understanding that members were attracted not only to equipment, but to the overall club experience.
One of his most significant contributions came through cardiovascular fitness. After acquiring the North American rights to an early electronic exercise bicycle concept, Wilson worked with Augie Nieto to refine and commercialize the Lifecycle. In 1979, they established Lifecycle Inc., which became the foundation for what would become Life Fitness.
Wilson continued to innovate with Family Fitness Centers, opening the first location in 1977. The company helped introduce practices that would become increasingly common across the industry, including family-oriented memberships, childcare, monthly dues, greater emphasis on cardiovascular exercise, and professional management systems.
His commitment to developing people was equally significant. Wilson created opportunities for managers and regional leaders to earn equity in the clubs they operated, helping develop a generation of fitness executives and entrepreneurs.
His entrepreneurial vision eventually extended internationally through California Fitness in Asia and club development in Mexico. Even later in his career, Wilson remained focused on finding new ways to make exercise more accessible to people who might not feel comfortable in traditional gyms.
Wilson died in 2022, leaving behind a legacy spanning health club development, fitness equipment, entrepreneurship, and leadership. His work helped establish many of the ideas and systems that continue to define the modern fitness industry.
Wilson will be formally inducted into the HFA Hall of Fame on March 10, 2027, on the opening night of The HFA Show 2027 after the Kick-Off Party. The HFA Show 2027 will take place March 10–12, 2027, at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Tickets to the HFA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner are available as add-ons to registration for The HFA Show 2027. Proceeds from the event benefit the HFA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charity focused on industry research and grants to help HFA member clubs and studios with their programs facilitating community health.
The HFA Show is the premier annual gathering for the global health and fitness industry, hosted by the Health & Fitness Association. Bringing together fitness professionals, club operators, industry suppliers, wellness innovators, and thought leaders from around the world, the three-day event offers a dynamic mix of education, networking, business development, and industry collaboration.
At the heart of the event is an expansive two-day trade show, where leading suppliers and emerging brands showcase the latest equipment, products, services, and technologies transforming the industry.
