Washington, DC, May 12, 2025 – The Health & Fitness Association strongly supports the tax package released by the House Ways and Means Committee and applauds Chairman Jason Smith and Committee members for their leadership by including meaningful, pro-health provisions—especially the measure that treats physical activity expenses as qualified medical expenses.
This provision, rooted in the PHIT Act, is a powerful step forward in recognizing exercise as essential preventive health care. It reflects years of persistent, focused advocacy from HFA and the growing bipartisan consensus that Americans should be empowered to invest in their own health and wellness.
We are especially grateful to Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) for his leadership and steadfast commitment to advancing this policy. His tireless support was instrumental in ensuring fitness was recognized in this package.
We also extend our sincere thanks to Senator John Thune (R-SD), the lead sponsor of the PHIT Act in the Senate, for his unwavering dedication to promoting healthier lifestyles through legislative action.
HFA urges the committee and full House to work swiftly to advance this package and important provision recognizing the value of physical activity in preventative health. We stand ready to work with the Senate to ensure that this language is maintained and ultimately signed into law.
